Shipping tips for beginners--UPS
Note: if the UPS shipping screen rejects your input (weight, size, ship date, etc.) it means the buyer has not paid yet. I drove myself crazy changing the specs only to find out the payment had been started but not gepleted and UPS doesn't have this glitch figured out yet, so just keeps telling you that what you entered is wrong. (But, you could be wrong, LOL! But if it persists, re-check payment screen by back-paging.) USPS allows the postage to go through regardless.
1. Stick with UPS for everything exceptbooks and music. (Use Postal Media Mail for these)
2. You can choose to have the price you paid for shipping posted on the label or hidden from the buyer.
3. Click the "Pick Up at Door"option on your screen. (If heavy, "pick up inside home" option).
4. Type "please insert label into pouch' in the "Instructions to Shipper" box on your screen.
5.Print a test label to check printer andto ensureyou loaded labels into the papertrayfront-side to ink, so you don't print a paid-for label on the back side wax paper, if you are using reallabels and not paper.
6. Print your label from your own printer! This part is exciting! The Print button is hard to find on the Post Office screen, use the cursor to page down and find it.
7. Check the label carefully before indicating that it printed successfully...it cost you money.
8. Promptly void and reprint labels if you have made an error, cursor down to see the void button if it does not display.
9. Print a packing slip, when prompted, to insert into the box with the item.
10. Save a cyber-copy of the packing slip using "Save As" in an "okay Sales"folder on yourPC.
11.Include a handwritten note, such as "Thank You, Tracy!"(like a gift) on packing slip.
12. Trim the paper shipping label along the dotted lines so it is the correct size.
13.UPS will supply the self-adhesive pouch for your package and apply it for you.
14.Place package outside your door with the label lightly taped or clipped to package.
15.UPS willarrive with a supply of label pouches just for okay shippers, and insert it for you.
16.Don't expect a note or receipt from shipper when you see package has been picked up.
17.Check the status of the shipment on your Seller screen to see that it was picked up.
18.Watch for the shipping charges on your paypal account, especially if you voided a label.
19. If an item is returned by the post office for some reason but should have gone to the buyer at a different address, simply get a white label and type the correct address and insert in ONTO the previously printed and used label and resend since the weight and amount will be the same, and the Post Office offers free forwarding.
20. Tyvek envelopes can be turned inside-out and used as a return envelope if your customer wants to return it. Since most packing materials are designed to degepose once used, this is a real service. And, it insures your item gees back dry and in an unripped envelope. To make it really easy, include a small address label stuck on the inside of the envelope for returns. I'll bet you don't get any returns, becausemost returns arefrom excessively picky buyersor those who areannoyed, and being this conscientious will satisfy the pickys and defuse any annoyance caused by late delivery or other issues. Don't risk badfeedback bymaking it hard to return a wrong item. For larger items, a box inside a box is great, with packing materials in between. Use unprinted newsprint (from office supply), children's flipchart/art paper (cheap), or wrapping paper wadded into loose balls and surround the inner box or merchandise. Avoid newspaper, used wrapping paper, and used boxes, if possible. For fragile items bubbles, popcorn, or ziplocks you blow up with your mouth and seal quickly will also work.
21. Don't be surprised when your expenses, time, energy and stress does not give you a profit margin, or, if you are like me, you probably lost money! That is expected, you were learning! The first few weeks on a new job are not profitable for the employer, but the employee gets trained--thats you! I know you will feel great when you geplete your sale and read how much the new owner loves your item.

USPS--The Post Office
1. Don't count on the Post Office to gee to your door like UPS, even though they offer this.
2. Media Mail is a real bargain. If you are shipping a book, papers, CD, tapes, or similar materials, select Media Mail and save your buyer money. Buyers are attracted to sellers who attempt to economize on shipping costs.
3. Tape your label (using clear shipping tape) onto your package/envelope but avoid taping over the barcode...it must be read by their scanners. They have no adhesive pouches.
4. Use a very sturdy envelope if using the Post Office because items take a real beating. Tyvek shipping envelopes look nice, are white, waterproof, and indestructable. Get them at Staples, Office Max or Office Depot. Select the plain, unmarked envelopes without the green "Airmail" markings. Pad your item with wrapping paper or a paper envelopeinside the Tyvek to prevent sliding and bump damage.
5. Drive to your post office with packages already labelled and sealed and drop them into the Drive Thru postal box. If the package is too large, bring it inside and use the Package Drop Box in the wall. Don't stand in line or purchase the materials or tape they supply which are expensive. Use the new Self-Service Package Shipment Center at the Post Office. It is open 24 hours, never has a line, includes a scale, takes credit cards, and has a large, secure drop box like a night deposit feature at a bank.
